Description

Carved oak wedding chest. The richly carved front features a central cartouche with scrolls and mascaron depicting Venus holding Adonis in a laurel wreath, surrounded by angels and hybrid beings. The cartouche is flanked by four caryatids with attributes and animals surrounding two niches housing two allegories. The sides are decorated with rosettes, flowers, shells and foliage. Each upright is carved in high relief with an allegory and animal in front of a Corinthian column. The top belt and plinths are richly decorated with shells, court scrolls, leafy interlacing and mascaron. It opens through the top and a drawer in the lower part. Normandy, late 16th century. H. 82.5 L.138. D.66 cm. Restoration; accidents, missing parts and woodworm. Provenance: Eure private collection Ref.
