Description

"[Alchemy] Michaelis MAIERI - Viatorium Hoc est de montibus, planetarum septem feu, metallorum Rothomagi (Rouen) sumpt. Johannis Berthelin (Jean Berthelin) 1651 - Alchemical work in Latin by the German physician Michael Maier, first published in 1618, the same year as his Themis Aurea devoted to the Rosicrucians. EXTREMELY RARE. Michael Maier's career is closely linked to alchemy: he served Rudolf II, who was very interested in alchemy, and then became interested in the Rosicrucians. His various alchemical works generally include a few engravings. This one includes 7 superb engravings, one of which is particularly striking, depicting an elephant in combat with a chimera. Also complete with engraved title-frontispiece. Bound in well-preserved full contemporary vellum, title in old ink on the spine, boards a little soiled but overall in very good condition, inside fresh with a few traces of old dampening but not serious. The author, an alchemist from Rindsberg, was a doctor of medicine in the service of Emperor Rudolf. He later devoted himself to alchemy and occult philosophy, authoring some twenty works, and is one of the authors of the Rosicrucians. Gardner 436, Caillet 7006, Stanislas de Guaita 544 for the 1651 edition. In-12, 224pp."
