Mis en lumière en faveur des Amateurs de la Vérité Chez Thomas Jolly à Paris, 1659 - Magnificent copy of the first edition of the French translation of this RARISSIVE WORK RELATING TO ALCHIMY. The translation is by Sieur du Teil. It is illustrated with 14 woodcut plates showing retorts, furnaces, athanors and other utensils used by alchemists of the time for the manufacture of precious stones and all other substances (1st part: 19ff. unencrypted, 71pp, a folding plate showing 3 figures; 2nd part: 1f. and 184pp (misencrypted 174) a folding plate; 3rd part: 1f., 74pp, 1 large folding plate showing 4 figures (fold slightly restored); 4th part: 92pp and 1 hors-texte plate; 5th part: 53pp and 7 hors-texte figures; 6th part 62pp ""Annotations sur l'appendix de la cinquième partie, où il est traitté de plusieurs secrets inconnus et utiles"". A fine copy in contemporary binding, complete copies of all 6 parts and all engravings of this important treatise on chemistry are rare. "This is certainly one of the most remarkable books in chemistry of the 17th century" (Feguson, l.324). It contains descriptions of furnaces and deals with the various methods of distillation, the many varieties of alcohols, oils, flowers, animals, plants and minerals and their uses. Although the name of the famous alchemist Glauber remains attached to sodium sulfate, "the admirable salt", he also discovered several other salts and showed great skill in the chemistry of dyes and the manufacture of artificial gemstones (Hoefer II-184) (Caillet 4570) Missing from Young, Dorbon and Duveen. De Guaita, 1421 In-8, (35) (preface on the translation, privilege, notice to the reader and table of contents) 71pp, 174pp, 74pp, 92pp, 53pp, 62pp."
