Description

"Rembert DODOENS (Dodonée) - Mechliniensis Medici Caesarei Stirpium Historiae Pemptades Sex Antverpiae (Anvers) chez Christophe Plantin, 1583 - A good copy of this botanical work, complete copies of which are particularly rare. A monumental work of botanical work and research, illustrated with some 1,300 engraved plant figures. Bound in full antique vellum, probably slightly posterior, in fairly good condition, soiled and split at the second jaw, solid nonetheless. Interior in generally good condition, pages soiled, some trimmed a little short with occasional small marginal paper losses, a few letters a little trimmed, small tears to be noted and very slight paper restorations notably on the last leaf (marginal restoration without lack of text). Scattered traces of wetness. The work that can be translated as "Histoire des plantes en six pemptades" is the work of the physician Dodonée (1517-1585), who began his work on botany around 1550 by providing the printer Van den Loë with texts to accompany Fuchs' botanical plates. The fruit of his labors and research was then printed and published by Plantin, who had the numerous figures engraved to form a general history of plants, divided into six parts, called Pemtades, each consisting of 5 books. They contain a total of 840 chapters accounting for 1340 plants (Summary of the article by Du Petit-Thouars, Michaud). Large in-4, (18) 860pp (27) Provenance: Ex-libris (ex-dono in pen) Josephi Francifci 1705 and a second undeciphered on the title page."
