Description

"[Collectif] Denis DIDEROT & D'ALEMBERT - Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts, des arts et des métiers Chez Pellet à Genève, 1777 - 1779 - A fine copy of this new edition of the encyclopedia, the third to be published, in 36 volumes of text and 2 volumes of plates (the first plate volume is missing). Format in-4, very fine period bindings in full calf, 5-ribbed spine and red morocco title-pieces. A few minor defects to the bindings (rare, not very serious and not very pronounced missing headpieces or tails on some volumes), generally fresh interiors, with a marginal halo of old wetness on the first pages of the first volume. Complete with portraits of Diderot and D'Alembert engraved after Cochin by Cathelin, and fold-out tables throughout. A vignette on the title page of each volume and woodcut decorative bands and initials at the head of certain chapters. Volume 36 contains a plate (plates V and XVI printed on the same sheet) with 10 figures to illustrate the article "Horlogerie Différents Échappements". The 2 volumes of plates contain a total of 308 plates according to the following collation: Volume 2: 56pp, 31pl, 47pp, 64pl, 11pp, 24pl. including 1 frontispiece, 8pp, 36pl. including 1 frontispiece, 48pp, 19pl, 52pp. 174 plates in all Volume 3: 64pp, 134 plates, the latter containing the supplements to the first two volumes, the first volume of plates is missing. A rare copy in UNIFORM BINDINGS, the two volumes of plates are bound slightly differently, with different finials, probably deliberately to distinguish them from the text volumes. The overall condition is very good, with a few scattered traces of old dampstaining and a few browned quires, not very pronounced overall: A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE."
