"Travel & Orientalism] Miss Julia PARDOE - The beauties of the Bosphorus, views of Constantinople and it's environs [Joint] Fisher's illustrations of Constantinople and it's Environs, with the seven churches of Asia Minor George Virtue, London, 1838 - First English edition of this account of a voyage by the British poet and novelist Miss Julia Pardoe to the Bosphorus, known as the "Istanbul Straits". The work is lavishly illustrated with steel-engraved drawings by William H. Bartlett, including 1 fine vignette on the title page, a portrait of the author, a map of the Constantinople area and 78 plates of magnificent and varied views. Very fine publisher's period binding in full blue chagrin, cold-framed on the boards and gilt-framed with romantic motifs, 5-rib spine with ornate boxes, gilt edges, gilt laces on the counterpads and marbled paper endpapers, some rubbing and a small discreet lack at the headpiece, fine condition. Very fresh interior, a few light marginal foxings, not very pronounced, this work is generally much more pitted given the fragility of the paper, a very fine copy. In-4, 164pp (4) [On Joint] Fisher's Son & Cie, London & Quai de l'école, Paris, no date [ca. 1838-1840] - A very fine set of this publication comprising a total of 90 steel-engraved plates hors texte, mostly after Thomas Allom; also a map of Constantinople and the Bosphorus and a title-page vignette. Text in English. Beautiful publisher's period bindings in full green chagrins with cold frames on the boards, gilt frames with romantic motifs and title of the work in the center of the boards, 5 ribbed spines with ornate caissons, tomaison but without titles, gilt edges, gilt lace on the counterpads. Some rubbing, head and tail of first volume a little scuffed. Attractive set with fresh interiors, a few scattered foxings, quite light and generally marginal, especially given the fragility of the paper. In-4, (36) 84pp, 84pp."
