"Pierre-François Xavier CHARLEVOIX - History and general description of the new France Chez Didot à Paris, 1744 - Published the same year as the original in-quarto, this smaller-format edition is also extremely rare, in six volumes. Uniform full contemporary calf bindings, decorated spines and red morocco title-pieces, some rubbing and snags not serious, good condition and a fine copy. Complete with maps and plates; the illustration consists of 28 folding maps and 44 botanical plates for the Description des plantes principales de l'Amérique septentrionale. The whole is a skilful combination of documentary and aesthetic. The work retraces the History of New France from the beginning of colonization to 1732, and the Journal historique addressed to the Duchesse de Lesdiguières, which the author begins with his departure for Canada in 1720 and continues until his return to Le Havre in 1722. As far as early works are concerned, there is no known more comprehensive work on the history and geography of New France (a territory stretching from Acadia to Canada and Louisiana, including for a time the St. Lawrence River watershed, the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, north of La Prairie, and a large part of the Labrador peninsula).
