Description

Buddha on naga - Khmer Art - Bayon 12th-13th century - Stoneware with traces of gilding. H : 53 cm. Wear and tear. Provenance: Le Calvez sale, December 5, 2010, Auvers sur Oise. This stoneware sculpture from Cambodia depicts the Buddha seated in a yogic position, legs bent under the body (virasana), on the coiled body of the heptacephalic naga (cobra) Mucilinda (in accordance with the episode that occurred during the 6th week after enlightenment), hands palms up, resting one on top of the other in the gesture of meditation (dhyana-mudra). In the palm of his right hand, there seems to be the trace of a small conical object (medicine jar?), which would allow this Buddha to be identified with the Medicine Buddha (Bhaishajyaguru) of Mahâyânic Buddhism proper to the Bayon. He wears the monastic vestment (sanghati) covering his left shoulder. The back of this Buddha, protected by the naga, is finely carved with scales in bas-relief, with a large stylized lotus flower in the center. The Buddha's stylized features (closed eyes, broad forehead, serene expression, braided hair, soft volumes, etc.) are a fine example of Khmer production from the Bayon period.
