"Jean-Baptiste ISABEY - Voyage en Italie en 1822 Villain, Paris, no date (1822) - First and only edition of this magnificent suite of 30 lithographed drawings by Isabey, one of the first to use this technique. Each plate is protected by a serpente. These superb, finely executed lithographs depict views of Italy's major cities: Rome, Pisa, Tivoli, Naples, Venice, Florence, as well as the Crater of Vesuvius, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Cadenabia and more. Beautiful, strictly period Romantic binding in half basane with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilded motifs very characteristic of the Romantic period, small tears at head and tail, corners dulled, all not serious. Interior perfectly preserved, a few very light marginal brown spots, engravings intact. Jean-Baptiste Isabey was a pupil of David, then official painter to Napoleon I and Charles X. He is one of the greatest artists of the period, and was one of the first artists to introduce lithography into French art (Brunet III, 460). 31pp unpaginated, folio.
