Nepveu, Paris, 1819 - First edition of this work by painter and traveler Antoine-Laurent Castellan, sought after in particular for its 50 beautiful views engraved by the author himself. Complete with all plates, including 6 double-page ones, the interiors are particularly fresh and free of foxing. Period bindings in full calf, smooth spines with gilt-embellished boxes and double title-pieces with gilt-lettered title and tomaisons, epidermal wear and small leather chips, scuffing and rubbing to boards in particular, head of volume 1 partly damaged but not seriously so, overall solid bindings with fine gilt lace frames on boards, marbled edges. In-8, 367pp, 307pp, 365pp (including 3pp of engraved scores, airs de la Tarentule). Provenance: Jean-Louis Ducis (with handwritten ex-dono in pen on each volume), a history and portrait painter whose portrait of Stendhal is known to be preserved in Milan, he stayed in Italy in 1811.
