"Pierre LOTI - The Pilgrim of Angkor From Paul Jouve and François-Louis Schmied, Paris, 1930 - Without doubt the most prestigious edition of this formidable text by Pierre Loti, recounting a personal and romantic version of his journey to Cambodia, to the heart of the ancient Khmer city of Angkor. Beautiful binding by Manuel Gérard in 3/4 red morocco with bands, smooth spine decorated with a composition on the tail, gilt head, excellent condition, very slight scuffing. Interior in perfect condition with no foxing, woodcut illustrations in color and gold engraved by François-Louis Schmied after drawings by Paul Jouve, including 10 hors-texte and 2 double-page illustrations, 13 chapter headings, 13 headbands and 13 lettering, and 11 illustrations in the text. One of 25 numbered contributor's copies in Roman numerals, signed by Schmied and Jouve in pencil at the justification. A magnificent copy in superb condition, enriched with the publication prospectus, which has faded inside the first two blank leaves on which it was placed. Departure from Papeete, July 17, 1937 This portrait was done by me, during a crossing from Tahiti to Marseille. It shows Félicie Tétuanui, Tarahu's granddaughter, who was a friend of Pierre Loti's brother, a naval doctor. Pierre Loti's brother had two sons by her, and Félicie is the daughter of the elder of the two boys. This friend of Loti's brother was called Tarahu. Loti took on the adventure of his brother who had just died, and it was this Tarahu that he made the Rarahu of his novel. JP Alaux (payable to Commissaire Ramel) Félicie was on her way to Lesparre to join a man named Bariac, a veterinary surgeon in Tahiti. Félicie showed me photos of her father (Loti's nephew). The family resemblance was striking. It was the same upturned head carriage, with its hard, austere stare and determined jawline. Félicie recalled Loti's tale of regret at the eviction, in which he searches in vain, with great anxiety, for his brother's children." What's interesting is to learn that the aforementioned Tarahu, whose identity had thus been proven, still told her side of the story. Loti being famous, it was undoubtedly profitable! It's true that Raymond Roussel was shown Rarahu's tomb, which never existed, so the legends went on...".
