Description

LARGE COLUMNED CRATER WITH RED FIGURES Side A features a scene with four figures depicting the departure of a hoplite: as usual, a woman holding a phiale appears at his side. The warrior wears a crest whose raised cheek covers (paragnathides) feature zoomorphic decoration. He is armed with a spear and a shield, with an episema depicting a horse. Side B depicts a conversation between three young ephebes draped in their himation. The secondary decoration occupies the upper part of the vase (a stylized two-tone frieze running across the neck). Black-glazed orange clay. Greek art, Attica c.470-460 B.C. Attributed to the Painter of Florence (J.M. Padgett, 9/10/2010). Height. 44 cm. Early restorations late 19th - early 20th c. (shellac and wax). Restoration in 2011 (very little intervention). PROVENANCE. Paris, collection of Mme A.M. An export certificate for cultural property dated December 22, 2023 will be given to the buyer.
