Gouache on canvas, probably Cambodia 20th century Approx. 190 x 88 cm. Painting divided into three sections: 5 gods at the top, 5 animals below: Cock, snake, tortoise, cattle, tiger, below the animals text probably in Khmer. In the center the Chulamani Chedi Stupa, surrounded by 12 gods sitting on clouds with mourning banners, below the stupa a scene from the life of the monk Phra Malai and Indra and Indranie and 5 other gods. In the lower part In the lower part Siddhartha Gautama cuts off his long hair with a sword as a sign of his renunciation of the world, Indra kneels before him with a bowl. Similar to the Tibetan thangka - creases, scuffing, the writing at the bottom barely legible, some marginal tears. Tears in the margins. R
