Gouache on canvas, probably Cambodia, 20th century Approx. 209 x 103 cm. In the upper part, Buddha is seated with Tarjani mudra - the gesture of warning - in front of a Bodhi tree, surrounded by 3 other enlightened beings. The lower part depicts 5 mudras with corresponding animals: 1 Dhyanamudra: gesture of contemplation, meditation, animal: rooster. 2 Abhaya mudra: gesture of encouragement, gesture of fearlessness, animal: snake. 3 Dharmachakramudra: gesture of teaching, animal: tortoise. 4 Bhumisparshamudra: gesture of earth invocation, animal: cow. 5 5 Tarjani mudra: gesture of warning, animal: lion. Jwls. below text probably in Khmer. Similar to the Tibetan thangka. - Creased and rubbed, the lower ca. 40 cm more heavily rubbed with loss of color and partly with missing parts. R
