According to legend, Buddha spent six years in complete abstinence with five ascetics until he broke his asceticism when Sujata offered him a bowl of rice pudding. Sujata believed Buddha to be a tree spirit who she hoped could give her the fertility she had been longing for. To express her gratitude for his appearance, she handed him the rice pudding. As he had come to the conclusion that fasting would only kill him but not enlighten him, he accepted the gift. On the right, a scene in front of the stupa with mourning ribbons referring to Buddha's death. Similar to the Tibetan thangka. - With loss of color, creased. R
