Decorative cloth in the style of the period on 5 bindings with stroked iron lines, rich blind embossing on spine and covers and gilt stamped title (slightly rubbed, spine minimally discolored). BP16, 101350, ADB 13, 328, Brunet III, 366, Graesse VII, 385 - Very rare second edition with partial reuse of the woodcuts from the first edition of 1504 by Grüninger in Strasbourg. "Born about the year 1470 at Schlettstadt in Alsace, (Hug) (...) received his scholarly education in Dringenberg's school, later became vicar at the parish church of St. Stephen in Strasbourg and then chaplain of Emperor Maximilian I, who highly esteemed his insight and oratory. In this latter position, he championed the emperor's cause and wrote his treatise on canon law, 'Quadruvium Ecclesiae: das kirchliche Viergespann oder der heyl. Kirchen vnd des römischen Reichs wagenfuhr' (...). The book, which appeared simultaneously in German and Latin (...) discusses the abuses prevailing at the Roman court with such frankness and biting satire that few writings of the time dealing with this subject can equal it." Very occasionally with a few marginalia and underlinings.
