Closely related to Annamite calligraphy (DU and TRAM characters), this piece could be contemporary with the Tay Son revolt and the Queen Mother's exile to China (Lê dynasty), with the Chinese intervention in Tonkin in 1788 & 1789 (see Schroeder, Études annamites, p. 70).
