Description

Paolo Benatti Collection

Sede Vacante (1590) Quadruple 1590 - MIR 1 AU (g 13.23) RRRR In 1590 there were two periods of sede vacante. The first after the death of Sixtus V from August 27 to September 15 and the second after the death of Urban VII from September 27 to December 5. Probably the issuance of this quadruple belongs to the second, decidedly longer period of which emblematically the image on the reverse is meant to recall the liberation of the Church from the plague that raged in the capital, bringing to the grave even the reigning popes. It should be noted that this is the first quadruple struck in Rome. A coin of great charm and superb quality. Of the greatest rarity, the only specimen to appear at public auction. EX Nomisma SPA Auction 62, lot 1011, realization € 124,000.00 + fees. TOP POP, best NGC certified specimen, in AU53 slab no. 5883923- 001. AU53
