Two volumes in-12 (12 ff, 571 pp // 92 pp, 7 ff), full brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated (Period binding). A good copy, despite minor snags to the covers of volume I. First French translation by J. Rou. Illustrated with a title-frontispiece, a dedication engraving and 103 copper-engraved emblems, interpreted from drawings by Jan Sadeler and set in cartouches. A major work by Saavedra Faxardo, who was Philip IV's ambassador to Germany. A collection of moral and political ideas in an agreeable form, interspersed with anecdotes for the instruction of Princes, written in particular for the education of Infante Balthasar, son of Philip IV. [Germany], [Johann Schen], [1610?] Large copperplate engraving (29 cm x 41 cm) printed on heavy laid paper. Probably by Johann Schen, an early 17th-century draftsman of the German school. Of the Habsburg dynasty, son and successor of Charles V, Philip II inherited an immense empire. It was under his reign that Cervantes wrote most of his work. In particular, he began Don Quixote, which he published during the reign of Philip III.
