Half-cape-red morocco with corners signed Champs-Stroobants, marbled paper boards with gilt fillet, gilt-studded ribbed spine, entrenerfs decorated with a stylized rosette mosaic of turquoise and olive morocco, marbled paper endpapers, covers and witnesses cons. (discharge of ex-libris on one bl. endpaper). In rhodoid sleeve and marbled paper slipcase. Very fine copy. Second edition, on strong vellum paper, published the same year as the original on light paper and offered as a bonus to readers of "Paris-Journal". The play premiered in Paris at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on February 1, 1872. Enriched with a visiting card from the author with a note in his hand signed "Sardou": "Cher ami, la comédie a encore un tambour à moi. Please send it to me [...], best regards". Ref. In-12 marbled calf, ornate ribbed spine, title page in red marble, red pages (period binding). A fine copy. Uncommon. Ex-libris C. Millon de Montherlant. Son of actor François Juvenon, known as La Fleur, La Thuillerie embarked on a career in comedy at the age of sixteen, in 1666. On April 27, 1672, he married Louise-Catherine, daughter of actor Raymond Poisson, known as Belleroche. An actor with a sulphurous reputation, he played at the Hôtel de Bourgogne and was a member of the first troupe of the Comédie-Française. Under his name were performed: Crispin précepteur, comedy in one act, in verse (1679); Soliman, tragedy (1680); Hercule, tragedy (1681); Crispin bel esprit, comedy in one act, in verse (1681), but these plays were rightly attributed to Abbé Abeille, and La Thuillerie was given this epitaph: "Ici gît qui se nommait Jean, / Et croyait avoir fait Hercule et Soliman."
