Half-cape-red morocco with corners signed Champs-Stroobants, marbled paper boards with gilt fillet, gilt-studded ribbed spine, entrenerfs decorated with a stylized rosette mosaic of turquoise and olive morocco, marbled paper endpapers, covers and witnesses cons. (discharge of ex-libris on one bl. endpaper). In rhodoid sleeve and marbled paper slipcase. Very fine copy. Second edition, on strong vellum paper, published the same year as the original on light paper and offered as a bonus to readers of "Paris-Journal". The play premiered in Paris at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on February 1, 1872. Enriched with a visiting card from the author with a note in his hand signed "Sardou": "Cher ami, la comédie a encore un tambour à moi. Please send it to me [...], best regards". Ref.
