DATIERTE PATRONATSIKONE ZUM GEDENKEN DER ERRETTUNG DER ZARENFAMILIE A DATED ICON SHOWING FAMILY PATRONS COMMEMORATING THE BORKI TRAIN DISASTER Russian, dated 1888 Tempera/oil on wood panel. The haloes and the background gilded. Alexander Nevski, flanked by saints including Sts. Mary Magdalene, Michael, Olga, George and St. Nicholas of Myra. The border made of gold, the stylized decoration emulating contemporary metal oklads. The composition is the result of a private commission commemorating the Borki train disaster in 1888 and the salvation of the Imperial family. Cyrillic inscription on the lower border, dated '17 October 1888'. Minor areas of retouching. 31 x 26.4 cm _x0013_DATED PATRONAGE ICON IN MEMORY OF THE SALVATION OF THE CZECH FAMILY Russia, dated 1888 Composite of three hardwood boards with two profiled sponki on the reverse. Oil painting/egg tempera on chalk ground, gold ground and border ornamentally engraved. 31 x 26.4 cm. Cyrillic inscription with date '1888' to lower edge. The vertical central axis depicts St. Alexander Nevsky flanked on either side by selected saints, including St. Nicholas of Myra and St. George, Olga and Michael and Mary Magdalene. The rim is decorated with an engraved braided border. The composition of the saints testifies to the fact that this is an icon created on the occasion of the Borki train accident in 1888, in which the Tsar's family survived unharmed.
