"Renaud dans les bras d'Armide" (Renaud in the arms of Armide). Aubusson Late 17th-early 18th century Carton after the painter Simon Vouet (1590-1649). Important wool and silk tapestry on the theme of Renaud and Armide "The scene depicts the two characters in the park at the threshold of a palace bordered by a colonnade and crossed by a river. Renaud, lying in Armide's arms, contemplates his beloved's face with a mirror he holds out to her, while two putti bear him numerous gifts. Border with garlands of flowers and fruit folded lengthwise, tapestry lined, minor wear visible in the middle of the composition. Taken from "Jerusalem Delivered", written by the famous poet Le Tasse in 1580, this scene illustrating the love affair between the young Christian Chevallier and the beautiful oriental sorceress was reproduced many times by workshops in Paris, the Marches and as far afield as Flanders throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
