Description

Attributed to POUSSIELGUE-RUSAND Placide (1824-1891). BENITIER in cast bronze, re-chased and silvered, matricé enamels. Marked and numbered 346 (catalog reference). The central part of this large and impressive stoup forms a large medallion, bordered by a geometrical frieze that hosts a mandorla surrounded by two interlacing foliage and plant motifs. The ellipse is adorned with a fine frieze of chased pearls, nestling the Virgin Mary in majesty and the Child Jesus blessing. Crowned, she is depicted as queen and mother, holding a scepter with the fleur-de-lys in her right hand, while the Infant Jesus carries the royal orb. The whole is surrounded by eleven cherubs alternating with the twelve apostles in champlevé enamel medallions. The upper part is surmounted by a trefoiled cross, itself recurved with this plant motif; it is anchored on a shell surrounded by grapevines and clusters. The lower part is linked to the whole by an angel seated on two griffins, which he covers with his outstretched wings. Clad in a 13th-century-style alb and tunic, he is haloed and holds a host adorned with a cross. His feet rest on the rim of a hexagonal bowl with six cut sides, adorned with finials and pine gables. The whole symbolically crushes Lucifer. Height: 47.5 cm Diameter: 24.2 cm
