Description

Georges POMPIDOU / CONCORDE POMPIDOU aboard CONCORDE - Air France presidential flight aboard "CONCORDE" F.. WTSS, Paris-Terceira [aux AÇORES] and return, December 12 and 14, 1971, 4 pp. in-4 under cover illustrated in color with a composition entitled "Nuit de Noël 1950" by SINGIER, menus for the snack served on the Paris-Terceira trip and the meal served on the return with wine list, white cord, some wear to cover. President Pompidou flew to the Azores island of Terceira aboard Concorde prototype 001 to meet US President Richard NIXON. This was the French President's first international flight aboard the supersonic aircraft. According to André Turcat, director of flight tests, an anonymous call reporting the presence of a bomb on board was received at the control center after takeoff. Certain of the aircraft's safety, Turcat took responsibility for continuing the flight without informing the pilot. What's more, the landing at Lajes air base took place in particularly difficult weather conditions (low visibility, flooded runway) and an accident was narrowly avoided. Despite these setbacks, the meeting between the French and American Presidents went ahead as planned. Discussions focused on the international monetary crisis. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, then Minister of Economy and Finance, and Maurice Schumann, Minister of Foreign Affairs, were part of the French delegation.
