Some historians consider 1153, the official year of the birth of the female branch of the Order: it was then that Pope Eugene III approved the founding of the Sijena Monastery community by Queen Sancha of Aragon, widow of Alfonso II, and her daughter Dulce. Thus was born one of the oldest communities of nuns in Christendom. At first they were exclusively relatives of the Knights of the Order of St. John, with the specific mission of praying for all of them and for the Grand Master. As in other monasteries, from earlier centuries they were called "Sorores," like the knights "Fratres."
