Description

Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) 18 original plates by Suzanne Valadon engraved from 1895 to 1910. Paris, Daragnès, 1932. One album large in-fol. [465 x 570] containing 18 plates preceded by an engraved title (Catherine au tub, 2nd state with engraved signature, printed in sanguine), a preface and a catalog essay by Claude Roger-Marx. Very fine, fresh proofs on white vellum [370 x 470], signed in pencil, pasted with pastilles to the upper corners under edition mats. Scattered foxing to the edges of the text leaves and rare foxing to the edges of the plates. Numbered copy signed by the artist, from an edition of 75 copies. Brick cardboard portfolio with flaps, with label glued to the upper cover. "This album, which for the first time brings together almost all of Suzanne Valadon's engraved work - long kept secret and only glimpsed until now - brings to light the singular merits and incomparable power of one of the few women painters to have mastered the art of hard metal. In the 18th century, a number of ravishing hands contributed to the book's illustration; in the 19th century, Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot played delicate games with copper, one with brilliance, the other with the most aristocratic fever. Too refined, too civilized, none of them, however, dared to use the pencil or the point as an offensive weapon, to go to war in the way of the males..." (C. Roger-Marx, preface to the album). The author lists a total of 26 plates engraved by the artist, 18 of which appear in this album. Detail of plates: 1 - Catherine au tub. 1895. Soft varnish.
