JAPON, NAMBAN 16-17ème SIECLE
Box with domed lid MOMOYAMA (c.1575-1625)
In black lacquered wood called Nanban, with fine gold foliage and flower decoration with mother-of-pearl inlays in geometrically framed reserves. Black lacquered interior, gilded copper alloy handle and lock engraved with foliage.
Commissioned for the Portuguese and Dutch markets circa 1609, Japan, late Momoyama period, early Edo period, early 17th century.
Nanban chests similar to this one can be found in several museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amstrerdam.
