Paul Mak (1891-1967)

2 works > La Reine de la nuit, 1964, gouache on paper signed and dated lower left, mounted on card - 18 x 13 cm > Le Cavalier, 1961, watercolor and graphite on paper, signed and dated lower right - 22.5 x 17 cm "It has been over thirty years since de Mak's work was last exhibited in London. After enjoying international renown in the late 20s and early 30s, both as a Persian-style miniaturist and as a court and high society portraitist, Mak has unjustly fallen into oblivion. A new look at the work of Aubrey Beardsley and his followers may explain the renewed interest in Mak. There is no doubt that there is a new appeal for this particular genre in painting. Pavel Petrovitch Mak was a Russian émigré. His life was more exciting than that of many of his compatriots, who consoled themselves by rehashing in books the drama of their exile..." (excerpt from the notice of the retrospective exhibition organized in his honor in London in 1968). Although not widely known, we invite you to rediscover this artist, whose recognizable style is of the highest quality.
