1932 HUONG KY. Official court photographer in Hanoi The return of H.M. Bao Daï to Indochina. The Emperor surveys his kingdom from Annam to Tonkin, meeting his subjects. Photo album titled "Hommage respectueux de la maison Huong Ky Photo à M. Le ministre de l'Éducation nationale en souvenir du voyage de S. M BAO DAI au Tonkin", the cover in imperial colors, decorated with Annam dragons among clouds. Extremely rare oblong album by Huong Ky Photo, featuring over 400 photographs, including several large-format ones, of H.M. Bao Dai's visit to Tonkin, including several shots taken at the Ecole des Beaux Arts d'Indochine in the company of Victor Tardieu, the institution's founder, and the Governor General of Indochina, Pierre Pasquier. The exceptional quality and diversity of these photographs make this set a unique record of the event, many of which have never been seen before. Album size: 28x38 cm. (The album is damaged and missing, but the photographs are in good condition). HUONG KY PHOTO. Official and unpublished photographic report by the HUONG KY agency in Hanoi. Italian-style hardback album (dimensions: 37x27.5 cm) with approx. 428 silver prints pasted together (most in 8.5x13.5 cm format). Cover decorated with imperial decree Do paper in Sino-Vietnamese characters and titled Hommage respectueux de la Maions Huong Ky A M. le ministre de l'Education Nationale En souvenir du voyage de S.M Bao Daï au Tonkin. Cotton cord in the imperial colors of red and gold. After an absence of 9 years, during which the young Emperor perfected his education in Paris under the tutelage of M. Charles, on September 8, 1932, H.M. Bao Daï docked in Tourane harbor aboard the colonial Aviso Dumont d'Urville. He returned to Indochina to take up his duties as Emperor, and toured his Kingdom, visiting Hué and then Tonkin. This was an opportunity for the government of the Third Republic to organize festivities and ceremonies with great pomp and ceremony. Arrival aboard the Aviso Colonial "Dumont d'Urville"; reception by the General Staff, military review in the presence of Governor Pasquier, popular gatherings, horse races, scout delegation, visits to schools, craftsmen's workshops, Société des Distilleries Tonkinoises, athletic competitions, magistrates, visit to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the presence of its director Victor Tardieu, shops in Hanoi, regional fair... Most of the photos are previously unpublished and bear rare witness to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, which was destroyed by bombing in 1942. In 1932, Édouard Herriot's government decided to rename public education "éducation nationale". Anatole de Monzie was the first minister to bear this new title. (Photos in good condition, despite a few scratches and pencil marks).
