Description

REIGN OF S.M. EMPEROR MINH MANG (1820-1840). Rare imperial pourer decorated in polychrome "phap lam" copper enamels with flowering foliage on a yellow ground. The body is richly decorated with two blue-ground cartouches, one featuring a five-clawed dragon holding the sacred pearl, the other a phoenix holding ribboned scrolls in its beak. The two fantastical animals move through the clouds. Elegantly curved handle and beak. The original lid. Vietnam, 19th century, made in the imperial workshops of Hué for the palace (Phap Lam Ty Tuong Cuc). Mark under the base with four Minh Mang Nien Tao characters, i.e. "made under the reign of Minh Mang". Height: 20 cm. (Very good condition, very slight damage). This design, combining a five-clawed dragon and a phoenix known as "Long Phung", is commonly associated with the imperial couple. This piece is the exact negative of the one presented in the March 1, 2024 sale "Trésors de la Cour de Hué - Une collection vietnamienne à Paris", lot 52.
