Description

REIGN OF S.M. EMPEROR MINH MANG (1820-1841) AND TU DUC (1848-1883). Curious composite work containing handwritten and printed pages, some for the use of the Court of Annam. The later binding was intended to bring the various writings together in a single volume in the 1930s. The book begins with a typed preface in French, listing the various parts of the work and then transcribing the section devoted to "Confucius' Advice and Doctrine for the King". The next part is a report by Eunuch YANG WEI, the court accountant in charge of products imported from the West, listing orders for the latter (vinegar bottles, shoes and miscellaneous). Another part of the work, "Confucius' Advice and Doctrine for the King", edited by Dong Zhong Shu (a Confucian scholar from China's Western Han dynasty), is complemented by commentaries by PU CI LONG and TSAI SHIH YUAN. Court preface by H.M. Emperor TU DUC. Reprinted on May 12, 1856 (ninth year of the TU DUC reign), encouraging members of the Court to follow the advice of Confucius. Finally, a handwritten part of the YANG WEI eunuch's report, probably including a list of rewards for officers. The last pages are dated March 23, 1831 (twelfth year of the Minh Mang reign). Dimensions: 30.5x19 cm. (Tears, accidents and missing parts).
