René Jolly (1910- ?) and Hélène Jolly-Miéville (1902- ?) Interesting file containing documents and photos concerning the career and life of a couple living in Tonkin in the 1930s. A letter dated December 15, 1945 from René Jolly provides an accurate account of the turbulent 40s in Indochina. - A surveyor, René Jolly graduated from the ESTP engineering school in Paris in 1935 (photo of the student festival with the ESTP engineers' section float). He arrived in Indochina on May 5, 1938 aboard the Messageries maritimes liner "Président Doumer". - A land registry engineer, he was seconded to the Geographic Service as a reserve corporal. On May 22, 1939, he became head of the Cadastre and Topography department of Indochina's Nam-Dinh province in Tonkin. On June 8, 1940, he married Hélène Miéville in Hanoi. - Cadastral engineer in Vientiane, Laos, from 1953 to 1956. Back in Nice in March 1956 aboard the Messageries maritimes liner "Le Laos": photo on board, postcard from the "Laos" Menu dated March 21 (cover only) and a typewritten notice from the Comité des Fêtes aboard the liner. - He ends his career as a divisional engineer with the Ardennes Departmental Directorate of Agriculture. Hélène Miéville is the daughter of Rodolphe Miéville, an agricultural engineer who settled in Indochina in 1909 and set up a number of climatic stations (including Chapa). From her father she inherited a large rice plantation near Haïphong, and a farm at Kinh Mon that was destroyed by the Japanese. - Three portraits of Hélène and René by the KHANH-KY studio in Hanoi (1933 and 1938). - Two albums of over 100 photos each, one tracing the genealogy and career of René Jolly, the other the life of his wife Hélène. - The album includes portraits of his ancestors, including Louis, a hero of the Great War. Family cradle in Honfleur, mission to the Indochina topographical service, Tonkin, Hanoi and some rare photos of typhoon damage in Hanoi in 1944. -Hélène's album retraces her life with her parents in Indochina in the 30s, 40s and 50s. René's civil and military service record, his passport issued in Laos in 1955. Agricultural war damage assessment file containing technical documents, land registry plans, cadastral plan of the village of Mieu-Nha, photographs of the "Miéville" farm following looting and destruction during the Japanese occupation.
