In-18, garnet-red morocco, smooth spine, spine cloisonné et fleuronné, triple fillet framing the covers with fleurons at the corners and in the spandrels and with a gilded coat of arms in the center, filleted edges, inner gilded border, blue tabis linings and endpapers, gilded edges (period binding). xliv-676 pp. stained linings and endpapers. The texts of Sacred Scripture are taken from the "Bible de Port-Royal", a French translation of the Vulgate produced by Jansenist intellectuals under the direction of Isaac-Louis Le Maistre de Sacy (1613-1684) in the second half of the 17th century. Initially condemned by the Vatican, it became a widely circulated reference version, thanks to its quality but at the cost of a few adjustments to appease Catholic censors. The present translation of L'Imitation de Jésus was provided by the same Isaac-Louis Le Maistre de Sacy. EXEMPLAIRE AUX ARMES DES BARONS D'AVIGNEAU (OHR refers only to the iron of their 17th-century ancestors).
