Nicolas LANCRET (1690-1743)

The hurdy-gurdy player. Oil on canvas. 94 x 74 cm. Some spotting in the background. Beautiful Regency-style frame in carved wood and gilded openwork stucco with foliate scrolls. On the reverse, two customs stamps, one on the frame, the other on the canvas. Provenance: Former collection of Baron Maurice de Rothschild, Paris. Tajan, Paris, December 14, 2006, lot 32; expert cabinet Turquin, (reproduced in color). Bibliography: Georges Wildenstein, Lancret; catalog no. 115, p. 79 (Reproduced full-page, no. 30, p. 144) (Paris 1924) The author states: "The figure of the hurdy-gurdy player in this painting was used by Lancret in the Dance in front of the Tent in the former Royal Prussian collections.
