BARYE Antoine Louis (Paris 1796-1875). "Reclining stag", large model. Bronze with rich green and brown patina, signed "BARYE" on the terrace, to the left of the animal's right posterior. Early edition cast by Susse, marked "SUSSE FRERE EDITEUR A PARIS" in cursive script without the pastille, probably circa 1840 (see biblography). "This first version of Cerf de Virginie, couché (A 169) is an early work that evokes certain pieces of French Renaissance goldsmithery.
