Description

Carved limestone bas-relief depicting the Last Supper. To Jesus' right, Saint John is asleep, arms folded on the table; isolated from the other apostles, Judas holds the purse of betrayal containing the thirty denarii, while he is dragged away by an imp. Late 16th - early 17th century H. 38 cm - W. 55.5 cm - D. 12.5 cm (upper left corner broken and glued back together, missing the heads of Judas, Saint John and another apostle) The position of the apostles, many with their hands resting on their chests, suggests that the scene depicted could be the precise moment when Jesus announces that he is going to be betrayed by one of the Twelve, with everyone rushing to ask who it is, leading Peter to swear that he would follow Christ to the death, an oath he would later renege on three times.
