Description

Fragment of a Carrying of the Cross in alabaster carved in bas-relief. Falling to his knees under the weight of the cross, Christ holds on with his right hand to a stone in the path, while Veronica (no longer present) prepares to wipe his face with the veil in her left hand. Probably Malines, mid-sixteenth century H. 22 cm- W. 23 cm- D. 7.8 cm (visible missing parts, a few accidents and restorations) The workmanship of this alabaster fragment bears many similarities to that of the gold-highlighted Crucifixion in the Museum Hof van Busleyden, Mechelen (inv.
