POLAND, 12th or 13th century Decorative element with leaning griffins entwined with a bunch of grapes Glazed terracotta panel H. 11.6 cm - W. 25.5 cm - D. 5.2 cm AL-EJ The results of thermoluminescence analyses carried out by the CIRAM laboratory on July 29, 2022 are compatible with the proposed dating. This glazed terracotta decorative element featuring two entwined dragons combines the aesthetic vocabulary of Western European Romanesque motifs with stylistic influences from the East. This type of decoration and the use of this material are well known in Poland, notably for the church of the Dominican monastery of Sandomierz, built in several stages during the 13th century. The decoration was entrusted to a ceramics workshop that produced glazed terracotta friezes with two types of motifs: birds and a Tree of Life, and the famous dragons with entwined tails.
