This altarpiece panel depicting one of the fundamental scenes in the Passion of Christ was produced in Germany in the 16th century. It may have been inspired by Israhel van Meckenem's engraving of the Ecce Homo, from which it takes its general composition and, above all, the detail of the little monkey chained in front of the staircase. Interestingly, however, fashion changed between the time of the artist's engraving and the relief. Men no longer wore poulaine, but sturdy square-toed shoes, demonstrating that the models had been in circulation for several decades, while being adapted to current tastes.
