Although fragmentary, this Christ of the Lamentation is of magnificent craftsmanship. The fine rendering of the beard and hair, the anatomical precision of the musculature and the prominent veins on the abdomen are the hallmarks of a first-rate artist. The subject and certain stylistic similarities bring this work closer to the production of the renowned German artist Leonhard Kern. A true witness to the evolution of 17th-century European sculpture, he was at the head of a vast workshop that produced small sculptures in precious materials - ivory, alabaster and boxwood - inspired by the great Italian artists of the Renaissance. The subject of the Lamentation of Christ, sculpted more in bas-relief, was one of his many works, as can be seen in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna. This figure of Christ reclining after being taken down from the cross was to be accompanied by other figures in a particular setting to create a scene of private devotion turned towards the Sacrifice of Christ.
