Description

Gaul-Paris region Parisian gold statère, Class II (according to Colbert de Beaulieu), 1st century B.C. features the two small chisel marks on the horse, typical of this series. Weight: 1.96 g TTB+ to SUP It is interesting to note that, according to J. Sills' research published in 2003, our coin is close to a workshop C, of "homotypic" form to the Parisii coinage and known by some fifteen figures, located in the Parisii province and whose production site seems to be around Gaillon (Eure), on the left bank of the lower Seine valley. This very specific series would have circulated around the Paris region from Noyon in the north of the Oise to Saumur (Maine-et-Loire) on a north-south axis, and from Gaillon (Eure) to Bar-sur-Aube (Aube) on an east-west axis. The "Parisian" designation is justified by the explicit inspiration of staters considered to come from J. Sills' ateliers A and B, whose iconographic themes are taken up in a more emancipated and stylized manner. Expert: Emmanuel de MONTEYNARD
