Description

Standing Buddha. Kingdom of Ayutthaya, Thailand, 18th century. Bronze. Very special figure finished with lacquer and gold. It has slight flaws. Measurements: 56 x 19 x 11 cm (figure); 68 cm (height with stand). Thai sculpture of remarkable quality. It is a bronze of the eighteenth century representing a standing Buddha, full body, wearing a sumptuous robe and with his right hand raised showing the palm. This gesture is called Abhaya mudra and indicates tranquility, security, absence of fear and protection. It is one of the first mudra described in the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain imaginary. In Thailand and Laos this mudra is associated with the walking Buddha. In the face we identify several lakshana or specific symbolic signs of the plastic representation of buddhas and bodhisattvas of sacred significance, such as the eyelids rolled up, symbol of spiritual concentration and also of purity, due to its similarity with the petals of the lotus. The serene and symmetrical face is a symbol of balance and serenity of a perfect being. Finally we also see the elongated earlobes, which allude to the large earrings worn by members of the upper classes and represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom.
