VAUCLUSE (84) - View of AVIGNON "City of PROVENCE, archbishopric since 1475, it was built by the Marseillois and was still the property of the Roman Republic in the 5th century, when it was subdued by the Burgundians, and then seized by the Gates in 1125. The counts of Provence and Toloze owned it jointly, and each had its own judges and officers. JEANNE I, who inherited it, sold it in 1348 to POPE CLEMENT VI for eighty thousand florins, worth forty thousand pounds of French silver. In 1305, POPE CLEMENT V and his successors JEAN XXII, BENOIST XII, CLEMENT VI, INNOCENT VI, URBAIN V and GREGOIRE XI established the Church's headquarters here (...) 18th century.
