Description

King Ferdinand of Spain, Europe, circa 1830 Folded fan, historical souvenir, the double sheet of paper engraved on one side with King Fernando of Spain receiving the tributes of the gods, including Mercury placing his caduceus before him, Hercules supporting the personified city of Seville, and Love, Abundance and Fidelity represented by a dog. On the left, the sun's rays illuminate the city, revealing a naval anchor symbolizing Hope. On the right, the view opens out onto the sea, with ships under full sail. The blood-and-gold Spanish flag is accompanied by a cartel reading "Por la franquicia del puerto/ Fernando he resucitado/ con el decreto que ha dado /a Cadiz que estaba muerto". And on the right, a second cartel reads "El escorial y Sevilla/ Son cosas digras de ver/ mas Cadiz siempre ha de ser/ la novena maravilla". The reverse features musicians in a garden. Mounted in blackened wood and painted with gilded scrolls. The head is covered with a bone plate. Height 24.5 cm-H.f. 14.2 cm (wear, restorations)
