Description

Colored palmette acroter. Circa 500 BC. H 31cm, W max. 20cm, D max. approx. 10cm. Made of beige clay with a beige coating, painted in red and dark brown. Eleven-leaf palmette above volutes painted in two colors, at the lower end on a curved band projecting outwards a painted egg stick, below it a meander painted on a straight band. Egg stick and meander belong to the geison. Remains of sinter, fragment. Cf. W. Mülller, G. Vogel, dtv-Atlas zur Baukunst (7th edition, 1987) p. 158. Provenance: Ex collection I. L., Austria, acquired between 1960 and 1990.
