LITERATURE - D’ANNUNZIO Gabriele (1863-1938) - Autograph letter signed Autograph letter signed 'Gabriel', dated '29.12.1896', by the Italian poet. Addressed to Marchese Pietro Lanza di Ajeta. Beautiful letter: “..Jeri finalmente terminai e spedii alla divina Sarah il testo francese della Ville morte. Così é definitivamente reciso il cordone ombelicale che ancora congiungeva il mio spirito all'opera. E sono libero, pronto a una nuova fecondazione…”. It is worth remembering that this tragedy was composed by d'Annunzio in Italian in the second half of 1896 and then translated into French by George Hérelle who, however - at the Poet's request - did not appear as translator so as not to negatively influence the Parisian public. The printed work appeared in 1898 in Italian and French and the first performance in French was held in Paris on 21.1.98 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, performed by Sarah Bernhardt. He made his debut in 1883 in Varese with D. J. Gomez's Guarany . He then began a career that took him from the minor Italian theaters, where he especially played the parts of Count Rodolfa in V. Bellini's Sonnambula , the king in Aida and Sparafucile in G. Verdi's Rigoletto. In 1893 he was cast at La Scala in Milan as Pistola for the first performance of Verdi's Falstaff. In New York, he sang at the Metropolitan in the 1895-1896 season and at the Manhattan in the years 1906 to 1910; in Chicago, he took part in the opera seasons from 1910-1911 to 1920. Artist information: actually Adolph Aloys Thywissen, also Adolf Alois Thywissen, called himself "Adolf Thywissen Junior" to distinguish himself from his father, German painter (1870 Burtscheid).
