Headbands, nerves, spines and corners rubbed. Numerous freckles. First edition, which, according to Baudelaire, sold out in two days. Flaubert began writing this novel shortly after the end of Madame Bovary's trial, and set the action in Carthage three centuries B.C., a far cry from the Normandy of the mid-19th century (Vicaire, III, 724).
