Description

1980 - Citroën Méhari French registration Chassis n°ELV4069 - Symbol of the French beach car, 4-seater version - Leaving the Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS reserves in 2021 - Exceptional mileage of less than 1000 original kms! - Recent cosmetic refurbishment, near-new condition The result of a meeting between Citroën and plastics engineers, the Citroën Méhari is a clever blend of utility and leisure vehicle. This daring project was the brainchild of Roland de la Poype, then CEO of plastics specialist SEAB. Unlike the 2CV, the bodywork is made of ABS plastic tinted in the mass. The advantage of this material is that it springs back into shape after slight impact, and has little or no fear of scratches. It can also be easily repaired, or even replaced in the event of significant damage. Another essential aspect is that the Mehari was designed to be cleaned with a water jet. The choice was therefore made to use solid materials that would stand the test of time, and a minimalist interior. The first cars rolled off the production line in 1968, but were hard to sell due to the unfavorable political climate. It was only later, in the 1970s, that sales took off, with annual production rising to around 10,000 units. After a 10-year career, a reworked version appeared in 1978, featuring a new, wider, removable front end and a reorganized dashboard borrowed from the LN. The addition of a twin-barrel carburettor was another step forward for a powertrain inherited, like the chassis after some hesitation, from the Citroën Dyane. In 1980, a 4-wheel-drive version was added to the catalog, although it was 160kg heavier than the Dyane, and production was discontinued in 1983. Production of the classic version continued until 1987, after 19 years in the catalog. Our example, recently repainted, is probably the one with the least mileage still in existence. Coming from the reserves of Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS, from which it was taken in 2021 when it was acquired by its current owner, it totals to date only 984 original kilometers!!!! At the time, it was used by PSA Group personnel to get around the Vélizy technical site. Today, this Mehari is practically new. Only the bodywork has been repainted in its beautiful yellow color, restoring it to its former glory. The original interior is in impeccable condition. As for the mechanics, simply overhauled, they are perfectly functional. Never registered before, this Mehari now has a 4-seater version of its French registration card, so that it can be used with peace of mind by the whole family. The original history of this Mehari, which explains its exceptionally low mileage and its excellent overall state of preservation, make it one of the most interesting vehicles currently available on the market. Acquiring such an increasingly popular beach vehicle with its singular history guarantees you a great summer as well as a wise investment, so don't hesitate and treat yourself to this sun-kissed toy for adults!
