Description

*VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, "Double Boule" model - Pair of earrings in 750 thousandths white gold and 950 thousandths platinum, composed of two curved back-to-back curves, one paved with brilliant-cut diamonds, the other set with calibrated sapphires in Serti Mystérieux. Systems for non-pierced ears, snowshoes in 750 thousandths white gold. Signed "VAN CLEEF ARPELS" and numbered "M35720". French work, diamond-shaped hallmark. Dimensions: 2.4x1.4cm. Gross weight: 23.4g. (Slight chips). The "Double boule" model, in diamonds and rubies or sapphires set in Mysterious Setting, was created in 1966. Invented and patented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933, Serti Mystérieux is the House's emblematic savoir-faire. Among setting techniques, Serti Mystérieux is considered one of the most complex, mastered only by a few craftsmen and requiring long hours of work. This technique allows the stones to stand out, without any claws or metal showing. To hide the metal, a "gold mesh" is created by the jeweler to accommodate the stones. Under the rondiste, on the breech, each stone is incised with grooves, enabling it to slide along the metal rails. Each stone also has four facets, giving it brilliance. The lapidary has to prepare each stone one by one, cutting them meticulously and calibrating them so that they perfectly follow the line of the piece being created. The term "Mysterious Setting" is reserved for Van Cleef & Arpels creations, a true demonstration of their jewellery-making expertise.
