SAINT-ARNAUD (Armand-Jacques Leroy de). Lettres du maréchal de Saint-Arnaud. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1855. 2 vol. in-8, black chagrin, ornate ribbed spines, triple gilt fillet and garland framing the covers, gilt edges, interior lace (period binding). First edition of this correspondence, crucial to the history of Algeria from 1837 to 1851. Lithographed portrait-frontispiece and fold-out facsimile. Copy with the A. S. of the author's younger brother, Adolphe Leroy de Saint-Arnaud (1801-1873), State Councillor and Senator during the Second Empire. It was a gift from the latter to Doctor Prosper Ménière (1799-1862), who had been called to the fortress of Blaye in 1832 for the pregnancy and subsequent delivery of the Duchesse de Berry. It was on this occasion that he made the acquaintance of Saint-Arnaud, then a mere captain, who was in charge of guarding the prisoner under General Bugeaud.
